Venerable bede dating

His idea was popularised in England by the Venerable Bede, who added the notion of counting backwards for dates 'Before Christ'.

He wrote over fifty books, the most famous of which is his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which earned him the title "Father of English History." In his histories he utilized a system of dating that had been developed by an Irish bishop some 200 years before but had been largely ignored.

Records show that a church has existed on the present site for more than a thousand years.

Restored and rebuilt several times in the intervening period, the present building is constructed of pink sandstone with a plain tiled roof.

Welcome to the website of St Benedict Biscop and our sister church The Venerable Bede, both of which are located in the large, attractive village of Wombourne, South Staffordshire, within the Lichfield Diocese and forming a major part of the Smestow Vale Team Ministry.

The parish church of St Benedict Biscop is a Grade 2 listed building and is a landmark building in the Wombourne Conservation Area.
